Abstract

Hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) remain significant global health challenges, with particular concern in Pakistan, including the Gilgit region of Gilgit-Baltistan. This study evaluates the prevalence and associated risk factors of HBV and HCV in a sample of 230 individuals from Gilgit. Unsafe medical practices, such as improper sterilization, coupled with a lack of public awareness and limited healthcare access, contribute significantly to the spread of these viruses. The study found a 3.04% prevalence of HBV and a 0.87% prevalence of HCV. Common risk factors identified include inadequate sterilization of medical equipment, use of unlicensed blood donors, and traditional practices. The results underline the critical need for improved public health initiatives, better medical practices, and comprehensive awareness programs to combat HBV and HCV transmission in the region.
