FUNCTIONAL AND RADIOLOGICAL OUTCOME OF PROXIMAL HUMERUS FRACTURE TREATED WITH PROXIMAL HUMERAL INTERLOCKING SYSTEM (PHILOS) PLATE

Objective: The study aims to assess the functional and radiological outcome of proximal humerus fractures treated with the proximal humeral interlocking system (PHILOS) plate.
Methods: A prospective descriptive study was undertaken comprising 88 patients. All patients more than 18 years of age with proximal humerus fractures meeting Neer’s criteria for operative displacement were enrolled. Patients underwent open reduction internal fixation with a PHILOS plate. Post-operative functional and Radiological outcomes were assessed at 3, 6, and 9 months following proximal humerus fixation using PHILOS.
Results: The average age of the patient was 37.93±12.63 years. There were 69.32% males and 30.68% females. Mean NEER score was significantly increased at 6 months as compared to 3 months [78.49±4.85 vs. 68.64±8.65; p=0.0005] and 9th month as compared to 6 months [85.24±9.53 vs. 78.48±4.85; p=0.0005]. The functional outcome (Excellent and satisfactory) was significantly improved over time (p = 0.0005). Good radiological outcome was significantly higher in the 6th month as compared to 3 months (29.55% vs. 76.14% p=0.0005) and at 9 months as compared to 6 months (86.36% vs. 76.14%, p=0.004).
Conclusions: In conclusion, the PHILOS plate shows promise in the management of proximal humerus fractures. However, clinicians should be aware of the potential complications and tailor the treatment approach to individual patient factors.
