Abstract

Background:

A range of delays in reaching gross motor skills adequate for an individual's age are included in delayed milestones, which affect standing, walking, and general physical independence. Delays of this kind affect a child's participation in everyday activities, social relationships, academic performance, and the development of basic motor skills.

Objective:

Assessing the effectiveness of the Interactive Play Mat in improving Gross Motor skills

Methodology:

This quasi-experimental study was conducted at CRC-CMATH, Lahore, with a sample size of 46 participants. The participants, aged between 2-5 years, were diagnosed with delayed milestones or cerebral palsy. The therapeutic intervention included the use of a playmat and conventional physical therapy. Inclusion criteria included children diagnosed with motor delays such as delayed milestones or CP, aged 2-5 years, and the ability to follow simple instructions. Exclusion criteria included children with severe cognitive impairments, other significant medical conditions affecting mobility such as spina bifida, and sensory processing disorders that interfere with the use of haptic feedback.

Results:

The study revealed significant improvements in child interaction and mobility after using the interactive play mats. Pre and post-treatment assessments showed an increase in child interaction (p < 0.05) and a reduction in motor impairment, as evidenced by improved scores on both the Child Interaction Observation Questionnaire and the GMFCS Family Report Questionnaire.

Conclusion:

The use of interactive play mats in pediatric physical therapy significantly improved both social interaction and motor function in children with delayed milestones and cerebral palsy. These findings suggest the therapeutic potential of play-based interventions in early childhood rehabilitation.
